SLED Updates the CWP Process: What South Carolina Gun Owners Need to Know

When we launched the first episode of the Red Suit Report, it wasn’t exactly under the circumstances we expected. But thanks to recent changes by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), we had an important update to cover right away. SLED has officially upgraded and transitioned the online application process for Concealed Weapons Permits (CWP), including new applications, renewals, and replacements. While the updated system appears more streamlined and user-friendly overall, the rollout caught many instructors off guard—including us at South Carolina Gun School. Almost overnight, we began receiving messages from students saying the process no longer matched our instructional videos. So, we went straight to work breaking down the new system step-by-step to keep you informed and confident moving forward.

The new process begins on the SLED website under the Concealed Weapons Permit section, where applicants are now required to create an online account before proceeding. Whether you are applying for the first time or completing a renewal or replacement, the portal walks you through verification, personal information entry, document uploads, and final submission. One major improvement is the integration of online scheduling for fingerprint appointments through IdentoGO. The system now offers significantly more locations and appointment availability than before, reducing wait times and simplifying scheduling. For new applicants, fingerprints are scheduled immediately after submitting the online application. Renewals and replacements are even easier, as much of your information will auto-populate once your account is created. Another bonus: the previous processing fees associated with fingerprint scheduling have been eliminated in this new system.

It’s also important to understand how these changes fit into the bigger legal landscape. As of March 2024, South Carolina enacted constitutional carry, allowing lawful individuals 18 years or older to carry a handgun openly or concealed within the state without a permit. However, a CWP remains valuable—especially for reciprocity when traveling out of state. A South Carolina CWP is valid for five years, and we strongly recommend setting a reminder 75–90 days before expiration to avoid complications. While the new system may look different at first, once you walk through it, the process is consistent whether you’re applying new, renewing, or replacing. As always, if you have questions, need clarification, or want hands-on guidance, we’re here to help. At South Carolina Gun School, our mission remains the same: making sure you stay informed, trained, and confident in protecting yourself and your family.
