Why Your Training Shouldn’t Stop There
Getting your permit—or understanding your legal ability to carry—is an important step, but it is not the same thing as being prepared to carry and fight with your firearm. A permit class is designed to provide a foundation and help you understand the responsibilities and legal considerations surrounding carrying a firearm. It does not automatically give you the practical skills, confidence, decision-making ability, or experience needed to handle a defensive situation. As we often tell our students, your permit training is not the end of your training—it is the beginning.
One of the biggest gaps we see is a lack of practical experience with the equipment people actually choose to carry. Carrying a firearm in a holster, purse, fanny pack, or other method requires you to understand how that system works and how you would access your firearm if you ever needed it. Simply owning a firearm or having hundreds of rounds through it at the range doesn't necessarily prepare you for every situation. Training gives you the opportunity to identify weaknesses, build good habits, and become more comfortable and confident with your equipment and your decisions.
The goal isn't to tell you that you need to train every week or spend thousands of dollars on classes. The goal is to continue learning. Even experienced instructors continue taking classes because another instructor may identify something they aren't seeing in their own performance. Formal training provides an opportunity to receive coaching, challenge your assumptions, and expose yourself to situations that can reveal gaps in your preparation. As I explain in the video, even instructors can be humbled by realistic training experiences—and that's exactly why continued training matters.
At South Carolina Gun School, our goal isn't simply to help you obtain the ability to carry a firearm. We want you to become comfortable, confident, and better prepared to make responsible decisions when it matters most. Whether you're new to firearms or have been carrying for years, there is always something else to learn. Don't let your permit be the finish line. Make it the starting point for becoming a safer, more capable, and more responsible armed citizen. If cost or scheduling is keeping you from getting additional training, reach out to us—we have different training options available to help you continue building your skills.
